I’m Katie Chonacas, I’ve been working in the entertainment industry for over two decades.
In 1997, I saw a commercial from the program “Children International” and by the power of “YES,” I saw how I could help a child in need somewhere in the world. I picked up the phone and called. A week later, a package came in the mail with Renalyn’s photo.
I was able to learn about her family's living conditions, their income, their struggles, and their dreams. Renalyn graduated from the program and gratefully I have been able to sponsor her all of these years through the evolution of technology. My dream has been to go to the Philippines to finally meet Renalyn, her family, and her community in person. A few years ago, I asked her if it was ok to film our story and she said yes.
The time is now. I am making my first full-length documentary about our bond, our human connection, our friendship, and our love. I will enter it into film festivals to share our journey and the power of YES, how we can support and help one another around the world without ever meeting. How we are all truly the ripple effect.
Although I have been wanting to make this physical connection for 20-plus years, I realize there are risks involved. I have been informed that it's a very dangerous area and that I need to make sure that I have security with me at all times as this is three hours outside of Manila in a rural area. However, my connection with Renalyn, her family, and her community is more important than any of my fears as long as I have hope, faith, and support.
