The State of Modeling 101

The State of Modeling 101
She's All Over The Place Podcast Season 1 - Episode 3 Transcription Thank you so much for tuning into she's all over the place with Katie. That's me. Hi Gems. Today, we're going to be talking about Modeling one-on-one too. You have what it takes to be a model T you want to be a motto, you know, there's different kinds of Modeling. I don't know if you know this or not. There are so many different types of Modeling. Okay. There's fashion Modeling, high fashion Modeling, lifestyle Modeling, sports lingerie, swimwear parts, Modeling, fit, size Modeling.

I mean, there's just so many. Oh, there's plus size Modeling. I mean, there's Modeling for babies. Toddlers. There's different agencies for children, teens, and adults. So it, it depends like on your Look because at the end of the day, modeling is really all about the product and the material. If you're wearing clothes, it's all about the clothes I know we like to narcissistically think it's all about us, the model, but really it's about the client, the product and the clothes. So let's just jump right into it. One of my first modeling jobs was a window model. It was during the holiday season. And you know, when you pass by Barney's or Saks fifth avenue, Neiman's, they'll have, you know, the windows all beautiful and very specific.
They would have me in all designer clothing, and I would be for hours inside of a window, people would pass by and think we were real mannequins. And then sometimes people would stop and like, realize we were real, but I was holding poses in such a way where I was a mannequin and it was so much fun. It was so much fun. It was so easy. I was a young teenager and I would go to work at like this high end boutique, and I would get dolled up and all these beautiful pieces of clothing. And it was, it was just so much fun. I went for a job interview at, I think it was called Jacobson's. It was this like high end boutique-y department store
I went for an interview and applied for another position and I didn't get that position. And I was a young entrepreneur and I gave the idea that I could be a model. I pitched that to the company and they liked the idea for the holiday season. And not only was it me, I got two of my other girlfriends hired as models as well. You have to have like a tough skin and be able to accept rejection. Cause there's going to be a lot of nos and it's very veiny. So if like, you know, it's like, oh my God, you have something right here. You have something right there. Or like a pimple or like your hair is too short. Your hair is too long. Like your eyes are too blue. Like you need to lose 10 pounds.
So it's very cutthroat. It's very specific. It's. And the note is everyone's going to have an opinion and put you in a box and tell you like, like how many hoops you need to jump through and you have to be willing and wanting to say yes, and then also check in with yourself and know when to say no and understand your value. And just because you're desperate and you're eager and you're excited and you have all these big dreams for who you want to become. And you have a vision of like who you see in your own mind's eye of like what you can be and all these big fantasies and everything, you know, it's like, it's, it's a very fine line of like productivity and then abuse too.
So it's like, you know, it's, it's very, very specific and it's like a washer machine. Like they'll just like throw you in and spit you out. If you want to be a model, what I would do in your area, I would Google top 10 modeling agencies. And you know, they all have open calls. So for males, it's one day for females. It's another day for kids. It's another day, or maybe they don't have an open call. Maybe they just have a male in submission. Or if, you know, you want to, if you're in a smaller town, but you want to submit to New York or LA or Atlanta or Chicago, they'll have mail-in submissions.
And so you can actually mail in submissions. It's very, very simple. They'll tell you on the website, the requirements and what kind of models they want. If there's height requirements, what they're looking for at the time and what kind of photos to do. So now you've decided I want to give it a shot. The very first thing you need would be clean cut photos. So you want to do a, they're only going to want two to five photos. Okay. Very simplistic. They don't have to be professional photos. They actually rather have snapshot photos. They want to see what you look like raw and natural little or no makeup at all. For females. You want to just do a little concealer and maybe a little gloss.
That's it? No eyeliner, no lipstick, no makeup, no looking like a clown. They want you raw and simplistic. Okay. So you want to wear something body conscious. Don't wear white. Okay. Don't wear patterns. Just have a solid color. I would just do all black. Just keep it simple. Like, you know, Modeling is very, very simple. Cause they want to like a canvas and they want to be able to paint you with their imagination. And then one of like a three-quarter and you smiling so they can see you smiling. And then you want like a full body and do like a sexy, just like standing there just so they can see the length of your body and the shape of your body.
And then they want one, three quarters and then they want one complete profile. So from the face and then you would be complete profile and you can do that head to toe or three quarters. So basically they just want to see you. They want to see your, your eyes, your teeth, your lips, you know, they want to see you in the front. They want to see three quarters, whatever three quarter shot you think is best for your angles, you know, get cute with it. And then just a profile shot. And that's it in the description below. I'll give you a couple examples. Okay.
So you can see what a clear board looks like. You can also go to the modeling agencies, websites, and look at their models and you can see how everything is very simplistic and clean. And most of them have white backgrounds. Okay. And you can have anyone, even with an iPhone take snapshots of you. So you need these couple of photos. You need one of just like, like however long your hair is. I had shot a serious shot. You don't need to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars. You need just someone who can basically hold a camera without it being blurry. I would love to give you an important safety tip. If you're meeting someone online or if you're meeting someone in general, meet them in a public place, never go to their house unless you know them, or it's a referral.
And someone's going with you. Like don't go to their house, go to their professional studio, make sure someone always knows where you're at. If you're going alone, leave the address, leave the phone number. Leave the time that you're going. When I was living in Michigan, every single appointment I went to, I always met in a public place. I would never go alone. If I did go alone. It was where it was in a coffee shop or at a mall. It was never like at their studio alone. I even when I went to public places, I always gave who I was meeting their website. They had one, you know, the address, what time I was going. And I always left my tracks of where I was going. Even when I moved to California, I did that.
I always let people know where I was going and what I was doing. You never want to show up somewhere when you don't know someone, especially if you meet them online, it's just like a cold call kind of thing. And I would never give anyone your money. A professional agency takes a percentage. They don't take money from you. So never give money. Anyone who wants money from you upfront, close the door, closed, shut the phone off and run. Did you learn anything I hope you did? And I have a lot more information to give you. I'm super excited. And also you're subscribing already, right? Subscribe, share with your friends, your loved ones. You know that someone who should be a model could be a model. Do you know anyone who's in the Modeling game, shared this with them?
If you want to be a model, check it out, see what kind of model you can be. You could be, you know, a lifestyle model or a plus size model or shoe model. Let's see, let's see like maybe just a hair model or a beauty model, or maybe you could just be a role model. You know, there's so many different kinds of Modeling. Lovely long time. Ciao. Thank you so much for joining us. We'll see you next time. KYRIAKi. over and out.
