The State of Being a DJ 101

The State of Being a DJ 101
She's All Over The Place Podcast Season 1 - Episode 6 Transcription Thank you so much for tuning into she's all over the place with the Kyriaki. That's me, Hi! Beautiful gems rock and roll today. We are talking about DJ 1 0 1. Cool. All right, let's get into it. Are you a DJ? Do you want to become a DJ? Do you have interest in DJs? Do you admire DJs? Do you know what a DJ is? What is a DJ? Right? Where did DJ come from? Like DJs have this thing about them. It's like cool. Like vibe. So when you do it to an event, if there's no music, there's no party, right.

Even if you're mingling, it's like, there's always music going some kind of playlist. So it's like a DJ has a responsibility. It's not just like buy DJ. Cool. It's a big responsibility because the DJ sets the tone and the vibe in the room. So whatever they bring as an individual is super important. We're going to get into all that. Okay. Let's get to the basics here. 1 0 1. So now in America DJ's are all over the place. Okay. It used to be like a really big, popular thing, more so in Europe, I guess, electronic music, a lot electronic music and electronic DJs.
So if you want to become a DJ, I would definitely suggest Googling you tubing, top DJs. And then, you know, P anyone can say they're a top DJ and put it on YouTube. So, you know, and then there are certain like algorithm. So you even, even if it says like on an article or on YouTube, like best DJ, like you have to do your research. So there's different kinds of DJs. So you can research. What are the different kinds of DJs, right? There's top 40 there's open format. There's hip hop.
DJ's EDM, which is a whole nother umbrella, DJs, electronic dance, music, there's intelligent dance music, you know? So then you can play during it's could be seasonal. So like maybe you're playing Christmas music or, you know, weddings are very big, very popular. Everyone, not everyone, but a lot of people get married, right? There's even a w even though people get married all year round, there's like a season of getting married, right? So you want to like, ha w Google on and look at like the best top songs for wedding DJs.
They pay a lot of money. If you're looking to, you know, be a working DJ and get money, wedding DJs are top-notch because they, the bride and the groom, especially the bride, they want their day to be super special. So they give you a list of like the music they want you to play, which is awesome. So you know what to play. And then also you have like, you know, you work with the client, we'll get into that more about catering to specific clients and their needs, and what's proper to play in, and what's not. So also a great tool is a MixCloud MixCloud, you can upload your music to MixCloud and they take care of all the legal fees for you, which is awesome.
We'll get into that later too. But another outlet is SoundCloud. So, you know, there's called like SoundCloud rappers are like, they're like big on SoundCloud. And then they like become huge musicians. And you're like, yo, where did this person come from? They're like, like SoundCloud famous. Right? That's that's the whole thing. And then, so yeah, you can listen to different artists and then listen to different DJs and get a vibe of what you like take notes, say, you know, definitely take notes and say, this is my vibe. This is what I like. This is what I don't like. So then, so then you have this canvas and putting your pros and cons.
You're seeing what you like and what you don't like. And then you start doing the groundwork to develop yourself as a human being and as a DJ. And when you're a DJ being a DJ is just an extension off of who you are off of who I am. So I love Grimes. I love at hearing. I love a tight bet and tribal beats. I love international Buddha bar music. You know, those things excite me. I grew up with oldies. I love all the melodies, clean, classy, feel good music with positive messages. For me in particular, the kind of human being I am. And the kind of DJ that I am is I feel as individuals, we have a responsibility and me being in entertainment, I have a fierce responsibility of what I send and what lands on others.
So I'm not into playing songs with swear words, things that degrade people, humans, women, spread your legs, work, the pole twerking. Like I understand it's like a culture and a vibe. And I come from culture, Greek culture and different vibes. So I get it. I understand it. But kids are very impressionable. So in human beings, like on a subconscious level, when they're at an event and you're like vibing out, you know, and you're dancing or somewhere, and it's like, they're hearing music, what you're playing, going to affect their mood of how they're feeling and how they're communicating and networking and connecting with other humans.
And so, yeah, I think it's definitely a big responsibility.

So you want to be a DJ or you want to get into DJ and see what it's like. So I think the most important thing is to do the fun stuff online and do research of the SoundCloud and the things I just mentioned also to take it to the next step, to be interactive. Mostly everywhere you go has a guitar center, go into guitar center, go into the DJ section and you can play on all the controllers. You can even talk to a DJ specialist. They have specialists in that area. Cause they're trained to know about it, where you can ask them questions, let's say, and then also you can go onto YouTube once, you know, like the best controllers and you can go into a rabbit hole and you can learn from other people who are interactive with the controller and learn about the different styles and ways you can DJ with the different electronics.
The next thing you can do is if you have an iPhone, there are apps, some are free. And then some it's a small fee, like 3 99 or something. I have a couple of them. One's called DJ too. So literally it's you download the app and you have a DJ controller on your iPhone or on your iPad. And the songs that you have in your library, you could upload them like you would be deejaying, play the song, scratch it, upload the other song, mix it. And then you can play around with different songs that are already in your library. So if you want to do a DJ class, it depends where you live.
So you can look online to see if they have local classes. You could do a one-on-one. Usually they have an introductory class where, you know, it's like four to six weeks, so you can try it out. They have all the equipment there. You don't have to buy anything. You just do the class and see if it's something you vibe with. And then if you don't have a place in your local area that has DJ classes, you can look up privates. You can look at their background, see if they have a website, do a referral. Do you do private lessons? DJ 1 0 1, just to like, get the basics and start learning. You can YouTube.
You can learn information. There's DJ classes online. I've seen some places where some people offer online. DJ, maybe with those that's more insightful information. Maybe, maybe then the next step would be having a controller that you could get your hands on at a cheap rate, maybe on Craigslist. And have, I would definitely say for just getting started, you can get something used. You can get something basic. You don't need to spend all this money. It's a very expensive hobby, a hobby. You can get a basic controller. If you're going to do a controller, a digital, just something very basic to get going.
Cause then you're to want to like, you know, turn it in. And it's, it's a, it's a baby step process. You don't want to rush it. Cause it's about the journey. Right? Subscribe, share with people that you know, that want to be a DJ until next time. I'll see you later. Ciao. Bye. Thank you so much for joining us. We'll see you next time. Kyriaki. Over and out.
